Is the "Rise of Trump" an Armageddon?

For the past few months, I can literally see and hear the word "Trump" everywhere. Whether when I pass his buildings, read newspapers, sit in class, and even when I play DOTA 2. His recent string of victories certainly dispel my first expectations about him. I have always thought that he just wanted to promote his books, perfume, and shows. Perhaps that was his first intention. Who would have thought he would progresses so far and we would see the likes of Jeb Bush falls.

But, is he really bad for the USA? Probably yes if he won. I would not deny that. His policies are populist and I really doubted that he would even be able to implement it all (Remember the Wall).  "Make America Great Again" is his slogan. But to be honest, is the USA not great anymore? Not at all. Probably for most Americans who have lived through you might say the golden age of the USA, life is hard right now. But the USA is still the No.1 country in the world. It has the strongest military, and you might say a really high quality of life compared to the rest of the world.

Donald Trump is probably the "worst" thing that can happen to you, but relax. You don't live in a third world country. You don't live in a dictatorship. Your country gives you financial aid and healthcare and although the system is not perfect, you can basically live a good life. Try going to another country and see how lucky you are to be born and be able to live in the USA.

  1. I completely agree with your argument that everything requires perspective. However, I will say that the consequences of electing Trump span beyond the borders of the United States. His policies will undoubtedly impact the many other nations that rely on the US for aid, military, and financial support. For this reason, I think that choosing the most powerful leader in the world is no light task and should be evaluated with all the facts.

  2. Well Trump is rewriting the playbook of politics. I don't think anyone predicted he would gain such momentum and go so far. I agree that America is still currently the best country in the world so let's try to keep it that way!

  3. Yes, the U.S. are not a third world country, and certainly Trump wouldn't be able to change the situation in 4 years. The only concern I have is the lack of a political program and the way his building his followers. He reminds me a lot of the way Berlusconi made his way to the top in Italy.

  4. I totally agree that Trump is taking over every trending topic. I don't think there has been a day since he started his campaign that I haven't heard his name. I definitely agree with the fact that U.S. is not a third world country and we have it better than most, but one president could change it all within 4 years. I don't think it would be the worst thing that could happen, but it would definitely do some damage.

  5. Just as what Sulekha said, if Trump is elected to be the president, his policies are going to have worldwide impacts because US is still the No.1 country in the world. Never know he could have gained this many votes before. It could be a bad thing to have him as a president.

  6. Thanks for you insights. I think you bring an awesome and sometimes overlooked perspective to this matter and I agree that we live an incredible place and should be grateful.

  7. This hits home. I believe the USofA to be the best country in the world and if (hopefully not) Trump is president, hopefully that won't change and we remain great.

  8. Last semester, I was abroad in Hong Kong and traveled to other countries in South East Asia like Thailand. I have to agree with you that yes, most Americans do have it easy being one of the superpowers in the world and it is easy to take for granted everything nice that we have here. However, a Trump presidency can also mean living hell for many immigrants and minorities because of the racism and xenophobia that Trump's platform runs on. America is not the great country that it used to be, especially not with the current state of internal and foreign affairs.

Just like how it is very hard to fight against a dictatorship and leave a third-world country, it will be hard for minorities to fight against racism and leave America because where else would they go if they do not have the financial means to do so? This is especially true when you look at the news and see that some minority groups are being gunned down or murdered every few weeks in hate crimes. While Americans do not have it as bad as third world countries, I firmly believe that everything is relative and there is nothing to relax about with a Trump presidency.
